Kickoff in Dubai

I know this is not the place to show off your holiday photos, but I have just attended the most fabulous kickoff in Dubai with my company, and I simply have to share it with you. Be prepared to be envious! :)

It was four truly hectic and very compressed days – we experienced a lot in a very short time and were all very tired when we came home. We ate great food and danced all night, we talked and hugged and everybody became good friends outside the department barriers.

At the first day we visited the new Dubai and were thereafter sailed with taxi boats to the old Dubai, where we visited a market. It was boring. I had planned to buy spices but since there was an intense smell of pee, I didn’t. There were lots of shops with spices:

And there were many shops with decorations for the home:
You cannot imagine how incredibly tasteless it was.

Thereafter, we went to the Dubai Mall, which is the largest shopping center in the world. I ran around with a colleague to buy shoes. She only bought one pair, while I controlled myself and only bought two pairs.

Later in the afternoon we visited the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world:
Everything is bigger and bolder in Dubai, you simply cannot imagine how rich and bold everything is if you haven’t been there.

The Khalifa is 828 metres tall and has 164 floors. As a tourist you can come up to 124 floor.

Later in the evening there was a fountain show, which also was incredibly big – I have never seen anything like it. Imagine water dancing belly dance!

The next day we attended a kickoff at the lawn of the hotel, we played beach volley at the beach and had the rest of the day on our own. I just laid at the pool and read. In the evening we should eat at Buddha Bar, but before going there our CEO announced that there was a change in the programme. We were driven to the Burj Al Arab hotel, the only seven star hotel in world and shaped like a sail! We sat and drank expensive champagne and took a thousand photos. We could freely choose a second drink from the bar card.

When we came down the bus was gone and replaced by Hummer limos:
It is an amazing company I work for!

We had the last day on our own. I needed some privacy, so I walked down a promenade, and started noticing the cars. There were no cars older than three years, and every third car was a luxury car. You kept hearing V8 and Porsche sounds all day. There were Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Camaros, Rolls, Porsches, Mustangs, Hummers and other expensive cars everywhere:

In the evening we went on a jeep saferi and boy, it was fun! We drove for about an hour and ended in the desert. Here I am standing in the middle of no where:

Eight Toyotas raced around in the sand and it was much like riding a roller coaster.

We stopped in the middle of the desert and drank champagne, sitting on pillows and carpets:

Thereafter, we were driven to a tent camp where we ate an Arabian dinner:

It will NEVER be ordinary day at work again!

Buy of the Year 2011

Previously, I have elected the Buy of the Year. In 2009 it was my little travel immersion heater that I bring with me on all my holidays, so I can enjoy a mug of tea. In 2011 it was my Pyrex measuring cup which I almost use daily, it is especially good when making latte. Previously the elections have been flea market finds, but since I haven’t defined the nomination precisely (and since I’m the one who determines the election) I thought that it could as well be something handmade. Anyhow it has to be something you cannot just run to the nearest supermarket and buy, and it has to be something that has made me especially happy and also made a difference. E.g. I have bought many beautiful nail polishes, but I don’t think I can say that they have made a difference. ;)

During Spring and early Summer I went down with stress twice and lost most of my memory. It is not much fun, especially not when you’re used to have everything in control and being able to remember everything. So I bought a beautiful, handmade note book at Etsy:
It is leather bound and the paper is handmade luxury paper, and taking this into consideration, the price was a bargain. I love note books, but when I sit with a brand new unused book, I always make silly rules about what to write and that it has to look nice and tidy. But with this one I promised myself to write whatever I felt for or needed. I have written lists, quotes, poems, ideas, thoughts – just what comes to my mind. And it helped! It did not remove my stress, but it has been and still is a great help in my weekday. It lies on my living room table because it is decorative, but also because I quickly can look up things or write down something. At Etsy you can find lots of beautiful handmade note books, so if you are tempted I sincerely recommend it. There should be something for everybody and every purse.

Tea Stones

What on earth is that, you ask? It is one of my clever dad's inventions and is brilliant, so now I pass the idea on to all you fellow tea drinkers. My dad was tired of waiting for the tea to cool down, so he collected some oblong stones at the beach, washed them in the dishwasher and then he put a stone into his mug, poured tea over it, waited a short while, took up the stone and his tea was ready to drink. Simple and brilliant.

I'm a Systematist

I suffer from order lunacy, I admit it, I don't thrive in mess. I have been tidying up as long as I remember and I love to systematize everything. My books are organized alphabetically, my music is ordered in genres, I have an Excel sheet with all my movies (and ought to make one alike for my music), my shoes, stockings, lipsticks and nail polishes are organized in colours. The last in my lovely new drawer.

And to enhance the nail polish system further, I have bought nail palettes from transdesign.com. I started with three palettes (x24 colours), they were quickly used, so now I have just bought three more palettes and look forward to having fun painting all my newly bought colours on the test nails to get super-system in my collection.

From top left are all the glitter polishes, in the middle are the black/grey/white polishes, and at the right are the effect polishes, that is crack polishes, magnetical polishes and a single glow-in-the-dark polish. More magnetical polishes are on the way. ;)

Below are a palette with red an purple colours, then all the pinks and at the right are the blue and green tones.

It is both practical and very inspiring to sit and look through all the palettes, so I sincerely recommend it.

Winter Decoration

I love to decorate for Christmas, in fact I call it to go Christmas Crazy. But a few days after Christmas I am as eager to pack it all away as I was to put it all up. Then it is welcome back to simplicity. BUT! I always think it is so empty, dark and dull after Christmas, so I have invented the Winter decorations! I have gathered some ice and snowflake related things. I love snowflakes and think they are one of mother nature’s most beautiful wonders, so why not decorate with them. I have snowflakes in most of my living room windows:

Goodbye to a Bad Year!

Normally, I keep the tone here on my blog light and happy, and I never complain or write about my problems. And since I don't have New Years Resolutions (except that I must not buy more nail polishes, books, lip balms, shoes ...!) and I don't evaluate the year either. But today I will dedicate this post to a well-meant GOODBYE to a bad year!

As some of you might remember I went through a big operation in the middle of October 2010, and I felt really bad 2½ months after. At the beginning of January 2011 I finally thought that now I felt better. It didn't hurt badly and I did not have nausea or vomited any longer. The day after I feel on our main stairs and broke my leg!

I waited, with many other fellow-sufferers with broken bodyparts, five hours at the casualty ward to be x-rayed and find out my ankle was quite crushed and my radius was broken. I had to meet the next morning to get an operation. I was absolutely NOT ready for this so soon after my last operation. I waited fasting a day to get the message that I should not go through operation, that the best treatment was no treatment. Then I put a knife to the throat of the surgeon and said that he should guarantee me that I would be able to walk in high heels again and that I was not just spared since there were so many broken arms and legs. He promised me I would.

Now, a year after, I walk in medium high heels, that is what most would call high heels, they are about 2½-3", and I'm still working on the higher heels. But it would never have been so without my fantastic physiotherapist. Without his brilliant treatments I would still be limping. You don't get anything from the hospital, only a poor little folder with exercises I could have figured out myself.

And I also went down with serious stress twice during Spring and early Summer. So serious down that I found myself lying among our boxes in the basement crying, shaking and even couldn't say my own name. Fortunately, I have a fantastic boss, who spend her Easter thinking about what to do to make me feel better and thereafter took good care of me. We are all VERY fond of her.

But good things have also happened: I have hosted two nail nights with great success, one in Spring and one in Autumn. Now all my female colleagues are Nail Nerds, even the most natural type has started a small collection of nail stuff.

Son has got an apprenticeship as a landscape gardener, and he is very happy! He is not literary, but unfortunately he does not have technical talent like his dad and granddad either. But apparently he is a very skilled gardener. I do hope that it continues the next four years.

And we have bought a holiday to Florida in February, with our best friend, Jesper, and his sweet family. All my life I have wanted to go to the US and now the holiday is finally paid, but it is still too unreal for me.

Before going to Floriday, I also have to go to Dubai with my company - it's a tough job but somebody has to do it! :)

Glittering Gifts

At my job we are very lucky, we can send our Christmas wishes to our boss, who then buys our gifts online. She also wrapped them beautifully and placed them under a palm tree, which she hadn't decorated though. We were all very curious for a week.

Can you guess what I wished? Nail polish of course ! :) I have wanted these three Deborah Lippmann colours for very long and now they're mine!
From left it is Across the Universe, Ruby Red Slippers and Glitter in the Air. I cannot wait to try them.

For once my men hadn't asked each other what they gave me and guess what I'm now the lucky owner of? The complete OPIs Muppet glitter collection:

And perhaps you all think it is very long time ago I last showed you my nails, and you wonder if I don't do my nails any longer? Of course I do, but it is difficult to take some decent photos with flash. This time of year it is dark most of the time in Denmark. But here are my Christmas party nails:
I wore a fabulous blue sequined blouse and tried to make my blue nails Christmassy with a star made of rhinestones. Unfortunately, it looks like my top coat has made them matte, ouch. The blue polish is from a local dollar-shop and the glitter polish is OPI "Simmer and Shimmer", SO lovely.

And my Christmas nails was a copy of the Nail Nymphs' Christmas design:My plan was to make a reverse version: green nails with red glitter tips, but the day before I made this design on a friend's nails, since she was wearing a red skirt to a Christmas party, and then DH almost begged me to make mine exactly alike hers. I am sure the sweet Nail Nymphs don't mind being copied.

I also want to show you what I gave DH:A pinup picture of myself and my car. I ordered it at Johanna Ost in August when she had a half price campaign. She came up with the motif, she is indeed very talented and I'm very pleased with it - I'm sure DH is too.

Well, I gotta run, I have to test my glitter polishes. It is really a glittering Christmas this year.

My Collection of Glass Ornaments

As mentioned son gave me some fabulous glass ornaments as birthday gifts. I LOVE glass ornaments and since I was a little girl I have dreamed about one day being able to decorate a tree solely with glass ornaments - I can do so now. When I moved together with DH about 30 years ago, I started collecting. I bought a few every year since it is so expensive. My collection has a lot of colours, shapes and it all glitters. I could never have an elegant magazine Christmas tree in all white or silver or blue. It has to have lots of colours, be fun and different.

During the weekend I took twenty (!) photos without tripod, so I am sorry that some of them are not 100% sharp. I didn't have the energy to pull out my tripod, but I think they are all quite OK.

Much of the ornaments are ready to be hung on the tree.

I don't have Danish flags on my tree, since it is a tradition
from WWII, and I'm not THAT old. But I do have some
nice ornaments in patriotic colours like this onion.

I love vintage glass ornaments and have a small collection

like this funny pearl thing. I thrifted it at my MIL some
years ago and repaired it and she comments it every year.

DH always says that he never has time enough,

It's not a big secret anylonger that I love the crooners from the fifties. Last year I played Christmas DJ to get you all in the right Christmas mood, so today I have gathered a Christmas Crooner collection for you all:

Nat King Coles "The Christmas Song" is my favourite Christmas song, it is simply the best. I just LOVE his voice:

Great Gifts

About two weeks ago it was my birthday and it was a great day - even the gifts were great. I got everything I wanted although only two of the gifts were on my wish list. My family knows me well since they give such great gifts. If I want to share the gifts with you? Of course I do.

DH gave me a drawer for my nail polish collection:
My brother sent me a text asking "if a drawer was a little overkill for nail polish?", "Not if you have many!" I answered back. Many nail polish addicts in blogland have a Helmer drawer from Ikea, but DH didn't like it, and I don't complain. This one was the last one in the shop so he bargained the price and also bought me an Advent calendar:

I just LOVE Advent calendars and he knows it.

Son gave me this completely overwhelming gift:

The most beautiful glass ornaments bought at a museum for a fortune. A rhinoceros, a polar bear and a bee. I was truly touched. So now a rhinoceros will hang on my Christmas tree.

My parents gave me only reuse gift which they had found at different flea markets, and it was the best gifts ever. A.o. this fabulous pair of shoes:

My best friend, Jesper and his sweet fiancee, gave me this picture of Marilyn, which I - youwon'tbelieveit - don't think I've ever seen before:

I am a Lipbalm Addict!

Yes, I confess – I am a lipbalm addict! I LOVE lipbalms, lipsticks and lipglosses. I have a lipbalm in every room, in every pocket, in every purse, and in every car. And I keep buying new ones – a lovely scent or a funny tube - there’s always something I simply have to try. Since it is such an inexpensive little gift for myself and since I use them all the time, I think it is OK to buy them.

At Etsy you can buy the most delicious homemade lipbalms. I got a “sweet deal” at this seller: GreenNymph. I bought a.o. Cherry Pie, Vanilla Latte, Crème Brulee, and Caramel Apple. Yummi, they are delicious.

And the other day this Christmas collection hopped into my basked and typed my PayPal password – ooops, how can it happen!?!
Now I even cannot convince myself that I need more lipbalms.

Cruel Books

I’ve read some cruel books lately. I read a lot of different books – thrillers, fiction, I love non-fiction books and I read books with subjects I don’t understand, because I’m curious. Once I read a book about anorexia and another about a man who had a sex change operation, because I don’t understand it. I am and will always be interested in Holocaust, because it is so cruel and the strangest thing that has ever happened and it must NEVER happen again. Therefore, we have to read books about it and therefore I recommend two books (one of them unfortunately only in Danish), because we must NEVER forget:

“The Last Jew of Treblinka: A Memoir” is written by Chil Rajchman, who as a 29 year old was sent to the extermination camp Treblinka. He has never told his family about it, but after his death some years ago, the successors found a manuscript with his memories. Rajchman survived gassing by pretending he was a “hair dresser”, he cut off the hair of the women before they were gassed. Later he pretended he was a “dentist”, he pulled out artificial teeth from the dead. Rajchman survived ten month in the camp and escaped after a revolt where only 57 out of 300 survived. An expert has judged that approximately 900,000 died in Treblinka, but today that number is judged to be way too low. About 1,500,000 is judged to be much more realistic.
This book is very different from other Holocaust books, because it is the captive’s own words and not an interview book written by a journalist. Chil has written his memories right after his escape and I guess it was his way to get rid of the horrible memories. I can promise you that this is the most cruel, horrible and disgusting book you have ever read and will ever read. It is so incredible horrible that I did not get any pictures in my head. It is so surreal that I cannot imagine anything - my luck, because I don’t think I would have slept for 14 days after.

The other book is an interview book about Arlette Levy Andersen’s year (yes, a year) I Auschwitz. It is only in Danish and is titled “The Girl from Auschwitz”. By coincidence I saw her on TV and was immediately sold, I simply had to read that book. Arlette is French, a lovely elderly lady, who finally tells about her past.
Arlette Levy Andersen lived a year in the extermination camps Birkenau and Auschwitz at the end of WWII. For 40 years she did not tell even her own Jewish family what happened from she was arrested by Gestapo at a French university till she in May 1945 came home by train to Paris, where her parents picked her up.

In the book she opens up to the cruel experiences, because she feels she has to. “Soon there will not be anymore left to tell what happened.” as she says. It was that sentence I heard on TV and was sold. In the book Arlette tells about her childhood in Paris, the arrest, the deportation in cattle truck, and her stay in the extermination camps. After the liberation, Arlette travels to Denmark to study and falls in love with a Danish man, whom she later marries and thereby becomes Danish herself.

It is also very worth reading. It is much more quiet than Chil’s book, but it is still cruel. Since it is written by a journalist it includes are much more facts. I would love to hear her speech about her past.

But now I really need to read some superficial chicklit.

It Gets Harder!

I’m watching the Danish version of “Dancing with the Stars” every Friday night. I love it! It is perfect Friday night entertainment – beautiful dresses and lovely Dancing. But now there are only three couples left, and they are all great dancers:

Patrick and Claudia – He is a professional boxer

Tommy and Marianne – he is a famous Danish actor

Sofie and Silas – she is a professional skier

I wish they all could keep on dancing the rest of the Winter! :)

Nail Art 2.0

This Tuesday we had a Nail Art 2.0 event at my home. Yes, I work in the IT business. :) It was such a great evening. We had some lovely food from the local chinese restaurant:

After all the nice food we moved to the sofas, drank tea and coffee and threw some chocolate in our thoats, meanwhile the Konad plates were studied and designs were planned:

I'm sorry about the missing focus, DH is not the best photographer, but it was very nice of him to take some photos of all of us.

Here are four sets of nails I made. The first is my brand new light blue holographic polish from Makeup Store (called SIW). Everybody fell in love with it and it is really very nice. I stamped a butterfly on the thumb nail and star-like flowers on the other fingers:

The next set of nails are my new blue polish from Sally Hansen, which I hadn't even tried yet, but do I love it!? I have stamped black flowers and put a single rhinestone in the ring finger nail:

The next set of nails are proof that you should keep your polishes in the fridge. This nice purple colour is at least 25 years old and still going strong. :) I have stamped black flowers on all nails and put a clear rhinestone in the middle of each flower, very nice:

The next set of nails have a neutral base, her zodiac sign (sign of the lobster, haha) and a turquoise Nfu-Oh flake polish on top:

Petticoat

It is time for my quarterly bonus! Yes, another quarter has already gone by, unbelievable! I don’t understand it and before the wink of an eye it’s Christmas. Well, I LOVE Christmas so no complaints about that. Bonus money is spending money, a little spending is allowed although I have to save for our trip to the US in February. So I have invested in a petticoat:
Yep, a petticoat! I love the fifties and always dress fifties style. Back then women looked like women. But I have a confession: I have never owned a petticoat although several of my dresses would look lovely with such one underneath:
The mole brown dress will soon enjoy my latest investment. I am not brave enough to wear it at my job, but I will use it at every formal occasion. I have bought it at Doris Design and it cost GBP 65 (there are 36 metres of fabric in a skirt). The shop is situated in the UK.

And to stay in the fifties department – I’ve found my favourite singer (besides Elvis, of course) on vintage vinyl at Amazon – Sam Cooke:
I look so much forward to play his music on my record player, it is so much more charming than just putting a disc in the CD player. Do you know him? I am sure you all know Wonderful World, everybody knows it and it has been used in many movies:

Halloween Nails

At Monday it's Halloween, so I've made Halloween nails:

I gave myself Opi's Halloween set with a glow-in-the-dark light green polish, Zom-body to Love (I love Opi's polish names) and a black crack polish. I really like the idea of a glow-in-the-dark polish, but at daytime it is just a snot green colour. You can see it glow-in-the-dark at this link.

I wanted Konad's Halloween disc, I have the Christmas disc (and no, it does not play neither Last Christmas nor Rocking Around the Christmas Tree) and it is so nice, but the Halloween disc (M13) is disappointing, so I had to invest in M28 on which there is a nice spider.

At my thumb and little finger I have the glow-in-the-dark with the black crack polish over, at my ring finger are drops of blood from M13, at my middle finger I have a pumpkin from M13 and at my index finger I have spiders from M28.

Baking Recipes

I love to bake, but I don’t do it very often. Either I haven’t time, nor energy or both at the same time. Usually we also agree that it is not good for us, since we always have to drop a few kilos, sigh. But although I decorated for Halloween last Sunday, I already look so much forward to Christmas. In December it is legal to decorate all over the house, eat lovely dinners and surround you with family and good friends – but it is also BAKING TIME! And I have just invested approx. 3 dollars in this great recipe book (unfortunately only in Danish):
Yes, only 3 dollars, for a nice hardback book, filled with lovely photos and classic as well as new recipes. And what can you get for 3 dollars – almost nothing. Here are some references:
I have the complete series of baking books, it was a colleague who recommended them to me and gave me my first. What I especially like is the concept “one dough – 7 cookies” or “one dough – 3 breads, buns and Danish”, you get the picture. Genius!

I know it’s not fair recommending a Danish baking book, and I do hope you have something like it abroad.

I love recycling! I love finding a treasure in the second-hand shops, at the flea markets ... and in the bi-weekly refuse heaps. A couple of weeks ago I walked my five kilometres and looked at the heaps and what did I see? A squirrel restaurant:
I have wanted one for long, because I have many squirrels in my garden, and they are so cosy. But a squirrel restaurant is quite expensive, so having walked my tour I had to go back and get it. And it is perfect, I just have to fill it with goodies and hang it up in a tree. It is incredible what people discards!

The Lunch Pack That Grew!

Son has got an apprenticeship – life is wonderful! He is not the academic type, but he doesn’t have technical flair like his father either. He has now got an apprenticeship as a landscape gardener and he LOVES it! At the beginning he didn’t bring any lunch with him, like when he went to school. He has always hated making a lunch pack. Well, being a landscape gardener is hard physical work, so not before long son realized it was a good idea to bring some lunch with him. And the lunch pack grew and grew and grew:

What’s in the bag, you ask:

5-6 sandwiches made of coarse bread
approx. a pound of carrots
two bananas
a handful of snack peppers
1 can of tuna
1 corn-bar (healthy candy for desert)
2 mini juice cartons (those that comes with a straw)

And he eats it all – plus breakfast and a tremendous plateful of dinner. Perhaps it is time to make him pay for his keep!? :)

My Most Expensive Book

I have bought my most expensive book ever! I love books, and I also love jewellery and glamorous stars from the fifties. So I have for very long wanted Elizabeth Taylor’s book ”My Love Affair with Jewelry”.
She had an incredible collection of jewellery, and was a great lover of diamonds. She was married to Richard Burton twice and he gave her, a.o., a huge diamond of 69.42 carats, which he bought for 1.1 million dollars! Oh boy, what a gift! Well, back to the book. It is large, well-written, beautiful – and EXPENSIVE! And it did not get cheaper after her death in March this year. I have wanted it for a couple of years, but thought 130 dollars was too expensive. When the lady died I thought 130 dollars was cheap, ahem. And getting caught in customs and having to pay additional 90 dollars in total for tax, VAT and customs fee didn’t make it cheaper. But now it’s mine and I will enjoy it many years ahead.

Chevrolet Bel Air Nails

Son came up with this nail design! Yes, it’s true, and he also gave me the polishes from Depend. He gave me four different shades, all very nice and different colours, and then he said I should make Chevrolet Bel Air nails. I love vintage cars, as you might have found out, so I knew what he meant. I made a French manicure with the turquoise green all over the nail and the white on the tips. At my ring finger I put a green rhinestone, but it didn’t look green on the turquoise polish, but still it reminds me of the chrome on the car:

I have never been very fond of American cars. I think they are too big and the design is almost vulgar, but I can see why so many are fans of them. Here are some photos of the Bel Air so you can see the inspiration for the nails:

Nice and small and with a lovely lucite handle. It will be my favourite next Summer – if we get any Summer next year, ahem!

New Nail Terms

I follow the ”Nail Nymphs’” (Danish) blog, and have done so almost from the beginning. They are the best, very inspirational and I often learn something new. A couple of years ago, or perhaps just one year ago, I didn’t know the following terms:

Franken
It is a homemade polish, you have mixed yourself. You can do it from scratch - start with a clear polish and add some colour or you can mix it from different polishes you have in stock. I’ve done so since my teenage years without knowing it had a name. If I buy a polish that does not look as expected on the nails, I always mix in something else, until it looks like I want it to. A dull polish which is not used, might get some addition and perhaps a little glitter, then the investment is not wasted. I suppose the name is inspired by Frankenstien, who was homemade too. ;)

Konad
Is stamping, which I have previously written about here. It is fantastic – quick and super-easy, and it looks fabulous. I’m addicted, it has become a new hobby and many at my work have to check my nails every Monday – it is quite binding.

Ombre
Is using one colour scheme for all five nails, but graduated from dark to light. You can see an example here. I think it is really nice and will try it some day with pink tones, since I have so many of them.

Skittles
Are different colours on all five nails, preferably bold tones. I will translate it to M&M’s, since I know them better (= colourful chocolates). I tried this with my colourful Color Club polishes, but it was not my taste.

I think it looks great on others, but I felt just a little bit too old when I tried it on my own nails, ahem. See an example here.

And there is also: Shellac (polish that lasts for two weeks), Minx (foil), crack polish (polish that … cracks), and labels to make patterns, see and example here. Labels will definitely soon find their way into my collection, sounds like a really good idea.

I have always thought that I was quite modern and had a great collection of different colours, but it is nice to know that there still is room for new trends.

Son’s Tattoo

As all other youngsters son wanted a tattoo. His uncle, my brother, has been a tattooist, and as a little boy he has many times seen uncle “sew on” a tattoo (he used a needle). Back then he had those to transfer. He has always said that when he became a big boy uncle should sew one on him. As a little boy uncle often sketched a tattoo on him with his tattoo pen, it could last for days.

At the beginning of the Summer it was time. I did not say no, because I knew he would then have it made somewhere else and choose a silly motif he would regret the rest of his life. So I thought it was better talking about it and telling him to really should think about it. He did, and ended up with a design made of his initials: TGI. “I will always have my name.”, he said. He designed it himself, and I think it is really great:

It burned a bit, uncle is having fun.

Brother and I had several days before made him very nervous, you simply have to make fun of those bold teenagers. He was very surprised how little it did hurt, and brother said that son was one of the few men who did not whine at all.

So it was son’s first (and hopefully only) and brother’s last tattoo.

Once Upon a Time …

… there was a 17 year old boy, well almost 18, who saw a buxom blonde in tight leather jeans and a red striped T-shirt at the local discotheque in the country, where his parents had their Summer cottage. But she was with one of his friends, so he could only pad her leather thighs and dream.

The boy threw a party when he turned 18 at his parents’ cottage and the blonde was also invited. She arrived as the only girl wearing high stilettos and a homemade white Summer dress with small red stars and the highest slit in the world. All the other girls wore T-shirts, long sloppy denim skirts and flat, black Chinese shoes. The boy was hooked, so he was around her as much as possible although she was with her friend – it was his birthday after all.

Her boyfriend went home after his vacation, he said he loved her madly and would call her every day. After five weeks he hadn’t called a single time, so the blonde went to the discotheque with her friends – not to find another boyfriend, but just to have fun. Five weeks are a VERY long time to wait when you’re only 16. At the discotheque she meets the boy, who invites her to dance. She's a terrible dancer and he’s a very good one, but he kept quiet (later he taught her to dance). He invited her to hear his loudspeakers in his old VW beetle – she said “OK, I also go with you home to see your glow-in-the-dark stamp collection”. He got surprised and wondered what she meant.

The boy had just turned 18 and didn’t have a driving license yet, so the beetle was parked VERY far away (he had to hide it if the police showed up), and it rained, but they walked hand in hand. When they came to the car one tyre was flat. He asks what to do, she says he should change it, and hopped into the car sheltered from the rain. He changes the tyre while the rain pours down. A little kissing goes on before they have to pick up all the other friends – who don’t believe they have spent the time just changing tyre.

They have to visit her parents, because she has promised them to always tell where she is if she doesn’t come home to sleep – and it was looong before the invention of the cell phone. She wakes her mum and gets an OK, and they drive silently down the street, but the old beetle shoots, a huge bang, so her dad, who normally is a tight sleeper, wakes abruptly. And this was in their wedding song 11 years later.

… and they lived happy ever after – at least for 31 years now!

Congratulations to us, darling! You are still a good dancer and I still have the shoes. :)

Thousand Canapés

We threw a party for son who turned 18 some weeks ago, and he had ordered champagne and canapés on cocktail sticks as first course. So in my best “vintage housewife” style I spend half a day producing THOUSAND canapés! It took quite a long time to do, but it looked very nice and tasted delicious.

There were beans with bacon, made in the oven:

There were half mini-tomatoes with mozzarella and one leaf of basil, and there were cheese with grapes:
There were shrimps with a bit avocado:
And there were two different kinds of melon with ham:
We drank champagne in lovely tall glasses at our patio – and NO rain!

Party Nails

Saturday 2 July we were invited to my SIL’s 50th birthday, and to her honour her I designed these nails:
She loves cats, so I stamped Hello Kitty on my thumb and put pink rhinestones in her eyes. On my index finger a cupcake with a red rhinestone as berry on the top, she loves everything with cupcakes. On my middle finger a gift – since it was her birthday. On my ring finger a diamond, since she – as I do – loves jewellery and at my pinky a pink heart-shaped rhinestone, since my little finger often is too little to stamp motifs on. I wore a pink dress from the fifties therefore the nails had to be pink. I think she liked it.

The previous week I stamped this fruit theme to honour Summer, again I have used my new grey Opi polish as base:
Also very nice and even my (very) male physiotherapist has noticed my nails. :)

Vacation with Tiny Honk

Have you all had a nice vacation?

We have! And we were quite lucky with the weather. In week 27, DH and I drove out in the blue in my vintage car - an Opel GT that turned 40 this year. We did not have many plans except for going to the City of Toender in Southern Jutland, because we thought the city is so nice and the area so beautiful. And I also wanted to go to Lübeck in Germany.

On our way we had to change spark plugs, which we found very cheap at a local shop:

In the City of Toender we accidentially ran into a vintage car meeting. We were eating our dinner when suddenly a lot of lovely vintage cars came and lined up:

So we were asked to park my little car among all the others:

We visited the Mill of Hoejer which is beautifully restored and for about 5 dollars we could also visit a nice museum and a beautiful old garden:

We drove to the City of Moegeltoender where our Prince and his lovely wife lives, but since they were not at home, we had to buy our afternoon tea and perhaps the biggest apple cake in the world at "granny's café":

There was so lovely and she was also an artist, you could buy trays and shrines painted by her. This sign is very charming:

This is a three-dimensional city map of the City of Lübeck. It is very elaborate and even has the street names and landmarks written in Braille:

The day after we drove to Timmendorfer Beach (also in Germany). I want a beach chair like these, they are simply too charming:

They were all so cheap that I could not afford to let them go. From left to right: three flat pairs at 8 dollars each, two pairs with a French heel (which I can use now!) at respectively 8 dollars and 19 dollars (my most expensive pair), a pair of classic black stiletto at 9 dollars, a pair with kitten heels at 18 dollars, a pair of pink patent leather pinup heels at 18 dollars, a red and white pair at 9 dollars, and a pair of very early sixties black slingbacks at 9 dollars. So now I cannot even convince myself that I need more shoes! :)

Konad Art

Konad-what, you ask.

I didn't know anything about this a year ago, but it is really smart, so I want to share it with you. It is nail-stamping. It is super-easy, takes no time and looks fantastic.

You will need: a stamper (I choose the double and it is really good), a scraber and a holder for the plates is also a great investment, then you don't scrabe polish onto your table.
And of course plates with motifs, they look like this:

You can buy Konad plates many places, e.g. at eBay and Amazon. I bought mine at KonadDenmark, since I'm not interested in paying tax and VAT. The plates are a really good investment, since they never wear out. I have about 20 different plates now, since I was lucky to buy 9 used some weeks ago.

Here are some examples - the first is a design I made on my niece's nails. She wanted diamonds and stars:

She got it and I also added some rhinestones.

These are my own nails. I won the grey polish at BeautySpace.dk, it is from Opi and is named "Skull and Glossbones" (I love that name). It is a dull grey, but it is a really good base for stamping, so I think I will use it a lot. Here I have made red kisses, which have got a lot of attention everywhere:

It is super-easy: you put a little polish over the motif (and you don't have to invest in Konad's special polishes), scrabe the motif with the scraber, now you lift the motif with the stamper and stamp it onto your nails - voila, fabulous nails. And it takes about five minutes to decorate all ten nails.

MC Tour to the Isle of Bornholm

How was our trip to the Isle of Bornholm , you ask?

Well, it was great - right until DH drove over a kerb and cracked the engine - ouch!

We had rented a lovely little apartment with my BIL and SIL, which had the most beautiful view:

We had perfect sunshine to drive around in, so we saw a lot of things. Here I am with a perfect commercial for a smokehouse - a vintage Fiat 500:

It is so sweet. Note my extremely non-fitting mc-jeans. Is there someone out there who could design some well-fitting mc-jeans for women, please?!

While everything was still good - DH in front of the Church of Osterlars:
I love the round churches, they are really amazing and very different churches.

We also visited Bornholms Tekniske Samling, which is a fantastic museum. Among a lot of other things 6,200 cups were exhibited. A lady had collected them and she held the world record already at 1,500 cups. Here is a few of them:

Well, on the third day we wanted to take some photos of the Ruins of Hammershus, because of the lovely light - we should never have done that. Because it was at the Port of Hammer, DH drove over a small kerb and cracked the engine so the oil literally sprayed out:

Now what!?! He had never taken the time to put some road aid/help subscription on it. Fortunately, he had a very nice colleague at the Isle of Bornholm. He lend a car with a tow-bar, lend a big trailer and ramps somewhere else. But we spend all day at the small port. While we sat there waiting, all the youngsters of Bornholm came driving in cars and parked at the port. The drank, danced and listened to loud musik. There were several police men keeping an eye on them and taking alcohol tests on the drivers, so everything was under control. Here a few of the police men helped pushing the Rat on to the trailer:

Husband Humour

We're renovating our living room, and since DH is working hard to bring it back to it's former thirties glory - I have to cook. I can cook, but I don't find it funny. And to top it, I've packed everything, including the cook books, in boxes in the basement, so I'll have to cook from memory. I've been grocery shopping once a week and tries to get inspiration from the big fridges.

Last week DH sent me a nice text with kisses from the artisan saying that he loves my cooking and that he easily could get used to it. I texted back that he should take it easy, when the living room project was finished, the cook job was his again. Immidiately he texted back that he was sure the renovation would take at least three more years! Haha! :)

Colourful Error

I’ve lied to you! When you guessed that I’ve bought nail polish for my bonus. I fell completely in love with Color Club's Summer collection:
I follow several nail blogs, and have through them learned to be more (even more) brave. You might use colours that don’t match your clothes, and neither your lipstick. You might use blue, green, brown, grey, and purple colours – just because you like them. I have for many years used nice, discrete pink tones, but it is all over now. You can see them on here.

Well, when I tried them on my own nails, I didn’t like them as much. Perhaps I’m just a little, very very little, too old to try neon colours again. I’ve been there – in the colourful eighties. So I put them up for sale, and they was sold immediately.

Apropos pastels, I accidentially (ahem) bought these two Essie polishes:
They are SUPER nice and match each other so well that I’ve already planned several looks with them together (perhaps I’ll remember to take photos). I found them discounted to only 7 dollars at NiceHair.dk. Normally, Essie cost about 20 dollars in Denmark.

I’ve got a bonus! It is always nice money, which I’m not calculating with. It is also MY money, which means I can shop what I want for them – and I DO! Normally, I buy something extravagant which has been on my wish list for long. What I’ve bought? What do think? Shoes, purses, red lipsticks, perfume, nail polish, gadgets??? Nope! I’ve ordered … tadaaa … Dita von Teese’s Dita von Teeses autograph!

Yep, that’s what I’ve done. I adore old fashioned pinups and am a great admirer of Miss Teese. Who she is? She is a world famous burlesque dancer and style icon. She lives and dresses forties and fifties style and she looks fabulous.
I’ve bought this photo of her, and I’ve bought it signed especially for myself and sealed with a kiss! I wanted to go to the max. :)
I will frame it and decorate my bedroom with it.

Some years ago I bought her book which is very good:
I highly recommend it. It has two sides, when you flip it around it has a more ”black” fetish side.

She is, as mentioned, a world famous burlesque dancer and has the most incredible accessories for her shows, which she designs herself, a.o.:

And I want the new Commodore 64 SOOO much: Then I could sit and play old games and be super nerdy. That design never goes out of style.

At the other more girly end I really, really want these for my Winter car: I'm not sure DH agrees with me, but they would without any doubt make my ordinary Polo look much more fun.

How Life Should Be

Last Sunday, we and our BIL opened Café Malerklemmen on DH’s motorcycle. The weather was beautiful, but cold – I regret that I didn’t put on my Winter mc-trousers. Fortunately, we came early, so we got our lunch quick. I brought my little camera and took some photos of the two-wheeled:

Driving to the café I thought that this is how life should be on a day off: driving a tour through our lovely Danish landscape, DH once in while reaches back to pat my thigh (you cannot talk on an mc, you point and pat), eat a nice lunch, look at some mc’s, have a talk with the other mc-enthusiasts, drive home again and enjoy a homemade latte at Café Stone Corner.

Colleagiate Cosiness

"Ohh, I love the French" "I'm not that crazy about it." "Oh dear, but it's a classic." "You can also do it another way than the usual!". As one of my sweet colleagues said, if you heard this bit of our conversation you would wonder a bit - what did you think this was about!? ;) It's about nails. I threw a "nail night" party for my lovely female colleagues. About 100 different nail polish colours came on the table, plus thousands of rhinestones, a little stack of art stickers, Konad stamps, glitter and about 50 art pens. We started the evening with pink champagne, ate sushi till we almost dropped, and laughed and talked a LOT.

I polished and decorated 40 nails with rhinestones in one night, here you see three of the four pairs of hands I decorated: Thank you for a fantastic evening to my wonderful colleagues. :)

Nemo on the Roof

It’s early Saturday morning, I look out of my kitchen windows – but what’s that?
It the neigbours' cat, Nemo, sitting on the roof waiting for his human parents to get up and let him in.
Our neighbours live on first floor, so they cannot hear their two cats at the door, therefore they have built a cat-ladder. But it is not every day you see a cat on a roof. :)

Free Buffet

I love feeding the birds in my garden, because I love to sit inside and watch them around the bird house. About 6 or 7 years ago I wished for a nice bird house, and I surely got it. Son has designed the "Mansion" and DH has made it. Here it is Mr. Squirrel enjoying the free buffet.

When son was a little boy he hummed while eating if he liked the food. But he is not that crazy about broccoli. :)
